Smelling the roses paid off

March 26th, 2008

About ten days ago, I needed a day to kick back and be creative.  My ‘Play Time’ Blog tells a bit about my experiments of the day but more from the point of view of how healthy it was to take time off and have fun with my tools rather than always working with them. The pleasant surprise was that I happened upon some photographs that inspired custom designed work. The lesson to myself is to keep a day here and there for inspiration.

Play Time!

_j2o7844-copy-copy.jpgThis is a tip for those who are feeling overwhelmed by all the hats we photographers need to wear in the digital era.   Take a day off and play with your camera. That’s what I did yesterday.  I played with my lights, backdrops, camera, and props.  I even went out and rented a Canon D1 Mark III to have some real fun!

I ended up with some great images, lots of unusual visions, and many mishaps.  I started questioning what if I kick the ISO up to 1600 and still add that back light but apply colored gels –how will that affect the image? My macro lens got dusted off. Finally, after wanting to experiment with four speed lites, the time was available to have fun with a set up of multiple off camera flashes. That’s what the day was all about.  The thing is, it is important for professional photographers to keep the fun in their photography.
